February 2007

This will be a quick post tonight. Oscar’s are about to start. I think George Lucas will finally get recognized for The Empire Strikes Back. Oh wait, he’s not nominated.

We just got back from Brandon today. We left on Friday night, all the while hoping the weather would hold out. They were calling for blizzard-like conditions across Southern Manitoba on Thursday. The drive wasn’t too bad, however.

We were out there to go to the Special Olympics Manitoba Winter Games being held at CFB Shilo on Saturday. Lisa’s sister, Leaha, was running in the showshoeing events. She did well and game back with a full set of medals, Gold, Silver and Bronze in the 1500, 800 and 4×100 relay.

Saturday afternoon, we had Jonathan with us in the pool. As you’ll be able to tell by the photos in the gallery, he had fun.

That’s all for us for now.

The Kitchen is almost done!

In the gallery, I’ve posted some before and after pictures of the kitchen. The cupboards went from a dark stained wood to a white. The whole room is brighter now. Next up for the kitchen will be a coat of paint on the walls.

Also in the gallery are some pictures of Jonathan.

Enjoy!

PS: Still REALLY cold here. Tonight dropping down to -32C. It’s been almost 3 weeks now of super cold weather. At least there’s been no snow to shovel. :)

Congrats to Superbowl MVP Peyton Manning for leading his team to the NFL promised land on Superbowl Sunday. A marvelous 29-17 win over the Bears finally marks Manning as one of the greatest QB’s in the game. As I predicted yesterday, his win over the Patriots took that monkey off his back and gave him the confidence he needed to step up and play big. After taking the first quarter to figure out the Bears defence, he took control of the game and systematically took apart the Bears.

It was a good game to watch. The Colts started a bit jittery, especially after allowing an opening kickoff return for a TD by the Bears. They seemed to settle down in the 2nd Quarter and by the third they just took control of the game. The time of posession was one of the biggest tales as Indy had the ball for 38 minutes to Chicago’s 21. That’ll tire out and frustrate any defence. It frustrated the fans as well. It’s always frustrating when you watch your team lose control of their game. But hey, they have a young QB in Grossman who’s now had the experience in the big game. He’ll walk away a better player and hopefully will come back hungrier next year. Chicago fans get excited if he does, it’ll make for a great season next year.

Night all.

Long time no post. A bit busy around here, sick too but hey, it happens. Finally managed a computer upgrade. So instead of being six years behind, I’m only 2 years behind in technology. It was the ‘budget’ upgrade.

Today when I woke up, it was minus 38C with a wind chill factor of -50C. Today we were ‘supposed’ to hold the Regional Winter Games for Special Olympics. We had to cancel all outdoor events due to the extreme temperatures. The rest of the week will seem balmy by comparison as we should see average temperatures (not including wind chill) of about -25C. Anyone want to visit? (Currently, as I type this, it’s -36C with a wind chill of -48C).

Interestingly, it’s actually warmer in the North West Territories (and Nunavut) right now than it is here in Winnipeg. Warmer by 14 degrees actually since they are around -22C. Figure that one out since the ‘usual’ logic is that it’s colder the further North you go. Going further north, to Resolute they are still warmer than us at -33C.

Global Warming my arse. I dare some of those global warming guys to get up on stage in the middle of Portage and Main and read that report. We’ll see how long it takes for them to run for the nearest heat source. LOL

Okay, kidding aside, this is how winter should be. Well, maybe not this cold, but definitely not like the balmy weather we had in November and December. Heck, the Great Lakes aren’t even icing up very much anymore! Let’s re-freeze those suckers!

So tomorrow, it’s Superbowl Sunday time! Should be quite the game. For the first time, we’ve got a Manitoban player in the big game. Israel Idonije who used to play for the University of Manitoba, now playing for Da Bears.

Everyone’s got predictions, so why don’t I jump in the fray as well. I think this is the Colt’s game to lose. More specifically, Peyton Manning’s game to lose. Throughout his playing career (so far) he’s been a great regular season QB who choked under playoff pressure. By beating the Patriots and Tom Brady, he’s just gotten a huge monkey off his back. The question is, will the defeat of the Pats give him the confidence he needs to put up a typical big numbers game? Or will his past creep back to haunt him and ‘choke’ him out of the game? The Bears have that big defence that could be enough to intimidate him if he’s got any jitters. Either way, it has the makings of a good game. Hopefully not one of those lame lopsided games that sometimes occurs unexpectedly.

My pick? Colts by 7.
